current:
I am currently registered for my PhD in Heavy-Ion Physics at
the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
Since my research topic is based on data from the STAR experiment at RHIC
I have spent a large amount of time over the past couple of years
at the
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California.
The aim of my thesis is to measure properties of phi-mesons
which are one of the many types of tiny particles
produced in heavy-ion collisions - more details below for those
who are interested.
conferences & papers:
Jet Study in Ultra-relativistic Heavy-ion Collisions at ALICE at the LHC
presented at Quark Matter 2004
past:
2000-2002
I haven't always been in Physics - for a while I ventured out
into the corporate world and worked as a management consultant!
It's really refreshing to be able to apply problem-solving skills
learnt in the pure sciences to everyday problems in the business world.
2003-2004
During these years I went back to study further and did my Masters research
in heavy-ion physics. The aim of my research was to optimise a jet-finding algorithm
to be used in analysis of jets in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
at CERN in Switzerland/France.
2005-
Registered for my PhD research at UCT...

FHSST:
I am also involved in an initiative to produce free
high school science textbooks to grade 10-12 learners in
South Africa.
Our initiative is called FHSST (Free High School Science Texts)
and follows the ideals of the Open Source movement, lots of small
contributions can add up to something great.
We have started developing a number of books (Physics, Chemistry, Maths,...)
and we are hoping to have the physics books produced, printed and distributed
by 2006. The other books will follow soon after.
To find out more about the project, click here: FHSST
sport:
My sport of choice for 2004/05 has been running so far!
There was no space in the plane to bring my bicycle with
me to the US!
My first big running event was the half marathon at the
Avenue of the Giants in the Northern California Redwood Park, 2 May 2004.
The next event is the San Francisco Half Marathon on 6 November 2005...
