This is a page with a little bit of information about me, Rory Adams, and my work.
I have recently completed my M.Sc. in field theory and have started working towards my PhD with the Alice group at UCT. Before the Masters I attended the UCT Honours course in theoretical physics and before that, completed a BSc degree in mathematics, applied mathematics and physics, also at UCT. So as you can see I have spent a large amount of time at UCT and am slowly becoming part of the "furniture".
I also tutor and lecture some mathematics and physics at the University. This is actually quite enjoyable and rewarding. It is kinda nice to see that spark of understanding in some of the students faces. The other bonus is that I get paid. This is, as most academics know, a necessity as the monies received from funding are generally insufficient to live on.
Although I spend a large portion of my time in my office, I prefer to be outside. I enjoy most outdoor activities and have played many different sports. Currently I rock climb, fly-fish (am a complete novice as I have just started), play golf and am generally keen to chase a ball or a Frisbee whenever some one suggests it :) I guess it is difficult not to enjoy the outdoors when you live in as beautiful a country as South Africa, especially when living in an area like Cape Town.
I have recently returned from Bergen, Norway. Two other students in my research group and myself studied under L.P. Csernai at the Physics Department of the University of Bergen. We went there to learn as much about relativistic heavy ion collisions as possible. It was really nice to be visit another country. Amazingly we made more friends with foreigners than locals.
As you might have notice I have an entry "Hermanus" in the menu frame. This is the town where I grew up. It's a small town in the Boland area about 1/2 hrs drive from Cape Town up the east coast. I was there from the age of 8 till the end of school. The "Hermanus" page has a few pictures from this beautiful town. There a fair number of people who do not like the idea of growing up in a small town, but I did. There is a freedom you have that you don't get in the cities, e.g. there is no way you could sleep with you front door open in a city. Unfortunately you can't do this in Hermanus anymore either. But in the good old days.... ;)
